Healthcare - MacMillan Cancer Support

Previous Arrow Next Arrow

The centre is built into the slope of Bristol Gate, at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton. It was designed with input from people affected by cancer to make it the best place to offer support and services in a calm, friendly and welcoming environment.

The horseshoe-shaped building has a complex two/three storey structure comprising a reinforced concrete frame and a hybrid superstructure of structural steel and glu-laminated timber. It’s highly insulated, certified to BREEAM ‘Excellent’, and clad in a combination of Siberian larch weatherboarding and render with a zinc standing seam roof. Externally access roadways, undercroft parking and storage were provided.

The building services are controlled through an intelligent building management system and comprise gas fired boilers, solar thermal panels, underfloor heating, greywater recycling and automated window controls to avoid the need for comfort cooling.

The centre comprises a reception area, terrace garden, café, offices, meeting rooms, counselling rooms, therapy rooms, a studio and balcony with a sea view. It’s the beautiful views of the horizon and the seascape from the top floor that inspired its’ new name, “The MacMillan Horizon Centre”.
