Education - Keir Hardy Primary School

Previous Arrow Next Arrow

Design & construction of an entirely new Keir Hardie Primary school for 480 children aged between 3 and 11 years, to replace the existing single storey school. Also, the provision of a 60 place Nursery.

Piled foundations support a reinforced concrete frame which was clad using Metsec walling and facing brickwork. Concrete soffites were largely left exposed in order to act as a heat store. Gas fired boilers served underfloor heating throughout. Passive stack ventilation & roof level Wind Catchers reduced reliance on mechanical extract/cooling.

Works included a double height main hall, dance/performance, studio, 14 classrooms and ancillary facilities. The building benefits from two staircase and passenger lifts and meets ‘Exemplary’ School Design Standards in terms of space provision and circulation.

The school is three storeys with a roof-top playground, planted area and pagoda.

Following completion of the new school, the existing school buildings were demolished
To allow the construction of play space, a multi-use games area, car parking and soft landscaped areas.

The building achieved BREEAM “Excellent” certification.
